GREAT DEMOTIONS

I find space fascinating and love to read about astronomy and astrophysics. I especially like demonstrations of the incomprehensible size of the universe. I feel it really puts life into perspective; when I’m feeling stressed, remembering that the universe is infinitely expanding and that we are likely a part of a multiverse suddenly makes getting an immediate response to an email a little less paramount.

I decided to design some of my favorite space-is-huge-and-we-are-insignificant meditations in the style of the white-inspirational-quote-over-nature-photograph stuff that seems to populate social networks such as tumblr, instagram, and pinterest. But instead of “not all who wander are lost,” I included the type of quotes that make me feel better, even though they kind of drift into morbid territory. Most of the quotes come from my favorite chapter of one of my favorite books, “The Great Demotions,” from Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot (which is where the zine gets its title.)
